The Cancer Council has released what it calls 'the 10 most common myths' on tanning and sun protection. They include: Children need a lot of direct sun exposure to prevent a Vitamin D deficiency; a baby suffering from jaundice or nappy rash will be helped by sun exposure; sunscreen may increase skin cancer rates; a child with olive skin is at less risk of skin cancer; only old people get skin cancers; it takes at least 30 minutes to get sunburnt; sunscreen is toxic; one application of sunscreen in the morning is enough; darker skin from a fake tan protects you from the sun; and you can't get burnt in the car or through a window.

Of course they're all untrue. You should still slip, slop, slap. Skin cancers are actually one of the most common cancers in young adults and treatment can be long and painful and leave permanent scars. If you've got any questions, phone the Cancer Helpline on 131 120.

Christmas Day is a time to spend with family and friends. One of the nicest Christmases Shaggy ever experienced was at the Lismore Soup Kitchen. Of course, the old soupie in South Lismore has since burnt down, but the tradition continues with the 13th annual Lismore Soupie Christmas Day at Lismore City Hall. Up to 130 people are expected to take part in the free lunch (which, thanks to the good people at Father Mac's Heavenly Puddings, always ends up with a sweet ending). It's on in the Fountain Room, beginning with drinks and nibblies from about 10am, followed by a traditional lunch and Christmas carols at 12.30pm. All are welcome. And if you'd like to donate anything or help out on the day, give Margaret a call on 6621 6936.

Lismore branch chose the Far North Coast Children's Home as their charity and they've had a great response with lots of big cuddly toys for the kids. If you're heading that way and have a few toys to spare, feel free to drop them off at the Woodlark Street branch.

The Resonians The Alstonville Plateau Historical Society Inc. is keen to find out the details behind a group called "The Resonians". This picture shows them undertaking their 'NSW Reso Tour No. 1 of the Hunter Valley and North Coast Districts' in April 1929. They may have been a group of farmers, as they visited a number of agricultural businesses. If you have any idea, call APHS Secretary, Brian Worthington on 6628 1557 or write to PO Box 65, Alstonville 2477.
