Keeping out of harmful sun
During the summer months people tend to spend more time outside, enjoying all sorts of recreational activities. Of course this can mean exposure to the sun's harmful rays. Most individuals are mindful of covering up when spending a lot of times in the outdoors. However, quite often the face itself is neglected in regards to protection from the sun and other inclement conditions. Because of year round exposure to the elements, facial skin is usually the first part of the body to show the signs of wrinkles and premature aging. The nose and delicate skin around the eyes are also particularly vulnerable, as are the lips.
It is essential to protect your face whenever you are out-of-doors in the sun by wearing a wide-brimmed hat and a suitable sunscreen. Re-apply frequently if you intend to spend all day outside and pay particular attention to your nose. A lip balm that will help to block UV rays should also be applied frequently to the lips.
Sunglasses are also a must when spending time out in the sun. Without them not only do you risk the possibility of eye strain in bright sunlight, but the delicate skin surrounding the eyes is prone to damage and eventually wrinkles. Select sunglasses that protect and fit over the eyes without leaving white areas. Remember, if you can see your eyes when looking in the mirror with your sunglasses on they do not give proper protection.
To prevent facial skin from dehydrating and drying out it is important to use a moisturiser prior to the application of a sun block. The following natural moisturiser is ideal for nourishing the skin and helping to prevent it from drying out.
Melt 10g of beeswax and 5g of anhydrous lanolin (wool fat) - both available from chemists or health food stores - in a double enamel or stainless steel saucepan over a medium heat. When completely liquid, stir in 60ml of almond oil, 5ml of wheat germ oil, and 20ml each of aloe vera juice and distilled water, until well blended. Remove from heat, stir in one teaspoon of clear honey and pour the mixture into a ceramic bowl. Beat gently with a wooden spoon until cool and of a creamy texture. When the mixture begins to cool, add twelve drops of lemon juice and six drops of tincture of benzoin (Friar's balsam), while still continuing to stir. Store in a sterilised glass jar with a tight-fitting lid and use within two months.
Apply the moisturiser to the face, rubbing gently in with the tips of your fingers.
To counteract the dehydrating effects of the summer sun the following lotion can be used on both facial and body skin.
Blend together 50ml each of rose water and witch hazel lotion and 100ml of distilled water, and store in a spray bottle. Spray on skin as desired, avoiding contact with the eyes.
You will find that this lotion is slightly astringent, leaving your skin feeling cool and delightfully fragrant.
