Clean air and community connection in Tyalgum
Thursday, 2 July 2009

In the event that Football Far North Coast ever decides to recognise the most picturesque ground in the region, the tiny village of Tyalgum, situated in the hinterlands of Murwillumbah, will surely have their name on the trophy. Being someone that gets a nose bleed when leaving the city limits, the early morning venture last Saturday as part of my “round the grounds” tour, was taking me into new territory. There are many places beginning with “T” in the northern part of our region, but even the GPS was unsure of exactly where Tyalgum was. What a magnificent surprise it turned out to be, with a backdrop of the local mountain range, crisp clean air and a welcoming that only comes from the ambience of small village communities. Tyalgum Taipans Soccer Club consists of only four junior teams, comprising 38 players and yet the atmosphere was akin to a major carnival. It seemed that everyone in the tiny hamlet was gathered at the local sports oval to cheer enthusiastically for the boys and girls and partake in a bacon and egg sandwich from their open-air canteen. The warm welcome to visiting teams and supporters to this hidden hiatus shows a community connection that was absolutely genuine. Having the opportunity to witness sport, played in the right spirit and supported by a level of positive reinforcement from every adult present, made the soccer more enjoyable and the results irrelevant. The congratulatory handshakes, applauding spectators and upbeat post game talks from the coaches, gave inspiration and satisfaction to everyone present. Before I headed to the next venue for the day, I was directed to their major sponsor, “Flutterbies”, which, apart from having sensational coffee, is arguably the most quaint little business on the coast. Amazing what a morning at your local soccer game can offer beyond being “just a game”. Full Article

Top of the table go head to head
Thursday, 2 July 2009

The stand-out match for Round 10 of the Football Far North Coast Premier Division brings the two teams currently equal on points at the top of the Premier table together when Goonellabah and Byron Bay clash at Weston Park, Goonellabah. Both teams boast impressive statistics, failing to earn points in only one game each this season. The Goonellebah Hornets defence has only conceded four goals in eight games, showing that Brendan Logan’s side is a formidable line to break. Central defender Paul Pomeroy, who played strongly last week, has the physical presence and experience to direct the young Goonellabah side. Byron gave Stars little chance last week and in an increasingly more impressive player roster for the Peter Ware side, dangerous strikers Jordy Campbell and John Bradbury will make life interesting for Goonellabah. Workers will be hoping to get back on the pitch after recent postponements and the game against Rovers at Bill Harris Field, East Lismore, may determine if Workers are contenders or pretenders. Agile keeper, Yung Sheng Chen can expect lots of work as the likes of Ben Casagrande and Troy Matthews probe the defensive line of the Redmen. Alstonville host Ballina in an interesting clash of two sides with similar statistics. Villa coach Mark Ambler seems to be making good progress with the development of his mainly youthful side. It was pleasing to see 16 year old Daniel Baxter-Wright on hand to slot home his first premier goal last week. This was a reward for a young player who appears to be benefiting from the experience of Ambler’s tutelage. The other two games bring desperate sides, Bangalow and Lennox Head together at Skennar’s Head with both needing 3 points for a lifeline as they stare at possible relegation for next season. Lismore Thistles are hardly happy with proceedings either and with the ominous prospect of meeting the John Essex coached Italo Stars, perhaps smarting after a flat performance last week it is unlikely that even a home advantage for Thistles will temper the Stars team, with Max Lattimer and wily Wayne Mortimer hungry for goals.
